Hatleberg - Man of Many Talents
Indeed—John Hatleberg is a counterfeiter supreme in the world of faceting. Commonly, “Replica” is the word used for a copied stone, but that word doesn’t quite depict the exactitude of John’s work, and “counterfeiting” is the word that John uses himself. A resident of New York, he is well known for his abilities, and owners of famous diamonds commission John’s faceting. That enables him to work from molds of the originals, and John produces exact duplicates, including the flaws (of course, much more exact than obtainable from working with a diagram).
John has done many famous diamonds, the names of which you will recognize, and now he has completed his crowning effort, the Koh-i-Noor. John said, “For 14 years it was my quest to recreate the original Koh-i-Noor and I am thrilled it will now receive its first showing…”. Interestingly, it is the “original” Koh-i-Noor, as it was when was presented to Queen Victoria, and before it was recut in 1852. It is on display at the Diamonds Exhibition at the Natural History Museum in London, England.
Quoting John-- “Within the world of diamonds, the Koh-i-Noor above all others demands to be regarded in the realm of the fantastic.”

The Ultra Tec Webmaster says... To while away some enjoyable time “web surfing”, google in the name “John Hatleberg”. You will find many articles about John—he’s at the same time an innovator—showman and entrepreneur — and counterfeiter!

John grew up in Washington DC, where, at an early age, he became interested in the Smithsonian gem collections. His parents were very supportive to his interest, and John started gem cutting in his early teens—yes, he has the “faceting gene”.
John uses the Ultra Tec for his exacting work and says he loves Ultra Tec faceting. He said—“Believe me, if the technology was out there to cut more precisely, or to somehow make my job easier, I’d buy it”. John owns two Ultra Tec’s (shouldn’t everyone?!).
